WHAT IS

KUMITE?

Kumite is one of the three disciplines of karate, and puts into practice the moves learned from the other two disciplines of kihon and kata to spar with an opponent.

Kihon is the first form of kumite you will learn. It includes three basic moves and defences. You will initially perform this gohon, meaning in 5 steps.

Kihon Ippon kumite includes 4 basic attacks and defences, left and right side forward, performed in 1 step sequences.

Jiyu Ippon kumite includes 6 basic attacks and defences, left and right side forward, performed in 1 step sequences. Commonly referred to as 'semi-free sparring'.

Jiyu kumite, otherwise known as 'freestyle sparring', is when two opponents can use any combination of moves against each other, typically for 2-minute stints.
